What Is Cellulose Insulation?
Cellulose insulation is made from recycled paper fiber — primarily newsprint — treated with fire retardants and pest-resistant additives. It's one of the most recycled-content building materials in common use.
Cellulose can be installed as loose-fill blown-in material in attics, or as dense-pack in wall cavities and other enclosed spaces. Each application method has different performance characteristics and installation requirements.
High Recycled Content
Typically 80–85% post-consumer recycled content — one of the highest of any insulation material.
Effective Air Resistance
Dense-pack cellulose resists air movement through wall cavities more effectively than batt insulation.
Thermal Performance
R-value of approximately 3.5–3.8 per inch — comparable to fiberglass and mineral wool.
Moisture Management
Cellulose can absorb and redistribute moisture without losing structural integrity — a useful property in mixed-climate applications.
No Tearout Required
Dense-pack cellulose can be installed in existing wall cavities through small holes — no drywall removal in most cases.
Fire Resistance
Treated with borate-based fire retardants that provide Class 1 fire resistance ratings.

Attic Loose-Fill
Blown-in cellulose is an excellent choice for attic floors. It conforms to irregular surfaces, fills around obstructions, and achieves consistent coverage when installed correctly. Saratoga Cellulose installs attic cellulose after completing appropriate air sealing.

Dense-pack cellulose is installed into existing wall cavities at high density — typically 3.5 lbs/ft³ or higher — through small holes drilled from the interior or exterior. At proper density, it resists settling and provides meaningful air resistance.
